During this past decade we witnessed a deterioration in the health status of international adoptees. More important than the change in countries of origin for issues of child health, were the changes in care environments for these children prior to adoption. In 1996 almost two-thirds of children were cared for in foster homes (depicted in yellow) prior to placement with adoptive families in the United States. In 1996 only sightly more than one-quarter had the advantage of a family enviornment prior to placement. Almost three quarters of children were cared for within insititional care settings (depicted in green). This presentation is about these children and the new challenges they bring to their families and to their health care providers. |
